2024 Oscar nominations include 12 films from TIFF 2023’s official selection

Toronto/IBNS: TIFF 2023’s official selection of 12 films have received Oscar nominations including American Fiction.

The films include American Fiction, The Boy and the Heron, Rustin, The Holdovers, The Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, Perfect Days, The Teachers’ Lounge, Robot Dreams, Four Daughters and To Kill a Tiger.

As part of TIFF’s Film Circuit programme in the coming months, this year’s lineup of Oscar-nominated films will be screening at TIFF Lightbox as well as across the country.

“TIFF serves as an essential launchpad for films…Our expansive and diverse audience, coupled with TIFF’s commitment…an unmatched platform for films…gain widespread recognition…grateful to our Toronto audiences for discovering these films first,” Cameron Bailey, TIFF, CEO was reported saying.

Over the years, numerous TIFF People’s Choice Award winners have gone on to secure Oscar nominations.

TIFF 2023 People’s Choice Award–winning film American Fiction, from Cord Jefferson, received five nominations for his debut feature, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor (Jeffrey Wright), Best Supporting Actor (Sterling K. Brown), and Best Film Editing.

The People’s Choice Award, determined by audience votes, reflects the collective appreciation of film enthusiasts, often signalling a film’s broad appeal.

Tribute Performer Award honouree of TIFF 2023 , Colman Domingo received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in George C. Wolfe’s Rustin.

Former TIFF Tribute Performer honourees who were nominated and went on to win Oscars include Brendan Fraser, Jessica Chastain, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Joaquin Phoenix.

Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, nominated for five Oscars, returned to TIFF in 2023 for its International Premiere.

A special screening of The Holdovers can be watched by the audiences at TIFF Lightbox on February 29.

In addition, Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, who debuted the National Film Board documentary To Kill a Tiger during TIFF ’22, received a nomination for Best Feature Documentary.

The film will be screened free to the public, on February 13, as part of the See the North series, presented by MUBI.
