Mumbai/IBNS: With the cinemas slowly reopening with the COVID-19 threat apparently subsiding, the makers of Hindi film 'Gangubai Kathiawadi' have announced the release date.

Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt, who plays the lead role in 'Gangubai Kathiawadi', tweeted to say the film, which is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, will release on Jan 6, 2022.

"Bringing to you a part of my heart & soul, #GangubaiKathiawadi releasing in cinemas near you on 6th January, 2022," she tweeted.

The film marks the first collaboration between the ace filmmaker and Bhatt.

It is produced by Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada under their respective banners Bhansali Productions and Pen India Limited.

The movie is based on a chapter of Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai about Gangubai Kathiawadi, a brothel owner and matriarch.

Bhatt, one of the leading contemporary Bollywood actors, was last seen in Sadak 2, which premiered on an Over-the-top (OTT) platform amid Covid-19 last year.
