'It's not just South Cinema': Nithya Menen on Janhvi Kapoor objectification row over 'Peddi'

In an interview with Variety, Menen condemned the objectification of women in cinema but rejected the notion that the issue is unique to South Indian films.

"I don't think we can isolate and say that this only happens in South Indian cinema. That is not true. I feel it's everywhere. It's a trend and everybody follows it," she said.

'Problem Lies in Hyper-Commercialisation'

Menen attributed the issue to the increasing commercialisation of the film industry, where content perceived to attract audiences often takes precedence.

"I feel the root of the problem lies in the hyper-commercialization of cinema. Whatever works commercially and titillates the audience is often indulged in for mass success. Is it too much? Absolutely.

"I wonder if actors should actually have better boundaries and the person who's performing the scene should be able to put their foot down and say they are not okay with being objectified," she said.

'Actors Must Have Strong Convictions'

The actress also stressed the importance of personal boundaries and artistic responsibility.

"I think it is important for an actress to have strong convictions. I can't imagine anybody telling me to do something because it's already established. I would not do certain roles or scenes.

"It depends on what your priorities are and what you think your responsibility is as an actor or artist," she added.

Backdrop of the controversy

The debate over the objectification of female actors in Indian cinema has resurfaced after the makers of Peddi faced criticism over the portrayal of actor Janhvi Kapoor.

Several viewers alleged that Janhvi was objectified in certain scenes of the film, which stars Ram Charan in the lead role and was released in theatres on June 4.

Critics on social media claimed Kapoor's character had little relevance to the narrative and was largely presented to cater to the desires of male characters.

Some viewers also alleged that specific shots focused on particular body parts for the male gaze.

Director responds to criticism

Reacting to the backlash, director Buchi Babu Sana has apologised and said portions of the film have been edited after reviewing audience feedback.

"After reviewing the feedback, we have decided to make changes to the concerned portions. Cinema grows through its connection with audiences, and as storytellers, we have a responsibility to be mindful of evolving perspectives and sensitivities."

"Every woman deserves to be respected, valued, and represented with dignity. We remain committed to telling stories that celebrate strong characters and uphold those values."

Released worldwide on June 4, Peddi is a sports drama set in a rural backdrop.

The film revolves around a village-level cricket tournament, blending sports, action and emotional storytelling.

For the role, Ram Charan reportedly underwent a major physical transformation, sporting long hair, a rugged beard and a muscular physique tailored to the character.
