Singer Jimmy Buffett, whose easy-breezy hit 'Margaritaville' had left generations of music lovers enchanted, died on Friday, his official website confirmed.

He was 76.

A statement released on his official website said: "Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs."

"He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,” the statement further said.

The cause of the death was not mentioned.

The singer was briefly hospitalised in May following a trip to Bahamas.

“I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention,” he had informed his followers in a social media post as quoted by CNN.

Jimmy Buffett was best known for his music, which often portrays an "island escapism" lifestyle.

Together with his Coral Reefer Band, Buffett recorded hit songs including "Margaritaville" (ranked 234th on the Recording Industry Association of America's list of "Songs of the Century") and "Come Monday".

He has a devoted base of fans known as "Parrotheads".
