Bengaluru, Oct 17 (IBNS): Former Indian cricket captain and spinning legend Anil Kumble turned 48 on Wednesday.

An engineer and lover of photography, Kumble made his Test debut against England in 1990.

He continued to be India's strength in spin bowling department until he retired in 2008.

Kumble, a right-arm leg spinner, clinched 619 wickets, becoming the third highest wicket-taker of all time, in 132 Test matches.

Creating record, Kumble became the first Indian bowler to pick all 10 wickets of a Test innings in 1999 against Pakistan. Apart from Kumble, the feat has been achieved by England's Jim Laker.

Playing 271 ODI matches, the leg spinner took 337 wickets.

Succeeding Rahul Dravid, Kumble became the Indian Test captain in November 2007 and continued till his retirement.

IPL journey:

In 2008, Kumble began his Indian Premier League (IPL) journey with home team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He had also captained the side for almost two seasons during his three-year contract with the IPL franchise.

Kumble announced his retirement from IPL in 2011. Post retirement, he was appointed as the chief mentor of RCB but he left the position in 2013 only to assume the same post in Mumbai Indians.

He resigned as the mentor of Mumbai Indians in 2015.

Administrative life:

In 2010, Kumble became the President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association. Two years later, the former skipper was appointed as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket Committee.

Coaching career:

In mid-2016, Kumble was selected as the coach of the Indian cricket team by a three-member committee, which comprised former cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, for a period of one year.

However, prior to the completion of his term as coach, Kumble had quit citing his "untenable" differences with captain Virat Kohli.
