Kolkata/IBNS: Abishek Porel, the Bengal cricketer who represents Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been arrested in connection with a criminal case involving allegations of rape, assault and criminal intimidation.

Police arrested Porel from Emami City under Dum Dum police station, according to Hooghly Rural police superintendent Kunwar Bhushan Singh.

The case was registered following a complaint by a medical student, who alleged that Porel had engaged in a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage and later subjected her to assault and intimidation.

The Calcutta High Court subsequently directed the police to arrest the cricketer in connection with the case.

Porel has denied the allegations in the past.

According to the complaint, the woman said she and Porel had been in a relationship for around three years.

She alleged that their relationship began to deteriorate last year, after which the cricketer started distancing himself from her.

The complainant further alleged that Porel had promised to marry her but later refused to do so.

She accused him of having sexual intercourse with her on the assurance of marriage and alleged that he subsequently assaulted and threatened her.

The complaint also contains allegations that Porel confined her and prevented her from leaving.

FIR details allegations of confinement, assault

The FIR contains a series of allegations concerning the treatment of the complainant during an alleged incident.

“Abishek Porel illegally confined the complainant. He denied her food and deliberately kept her isolated. As a result... the complainant became physically weak and was unable to walk properly. Despite having a flight... she was compelled to seek immediate medical attention due to the injuries sustained,” the FIR stated.

The woman also alleged that she suffered injuries and required medical attention.

Police confirmed that they had received the complaint and launched an investigation.

“We have received a complaint and started an investigation,” a police official told the media.

The allegations remain subject to the ongoing legal process.

Calcutta HC directs arrest

The case subsequently reached the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest Porel in connection with the allegations.

The arrest followed the complaint lodged by the medical student in June.

Porel had previously denied the allegations against him.

The cricketer has also represented India A and has travelled with the side to the United Kingdom and Australia.

Porel’s cricket career

Porel is a left-handed top-order batter who has been part of the Delhi Capitals setup in the IPL since 2023.

He scored 108 runs in four innings for Delhi Capitals during the previous season, according to the information provided.

The Bengal batter made his first-class debut during the 2021-22 season.

He has since represented Bengal in domestic cricket, making 32 first-class and 23 List A appearances.
