First T20I: Rohit, Dhawan power India to beat New Zealand by 53 runs
New Delhi, Nov 1 (IBNS): A couple of 80s by Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan,powered India to defeat New Zealand by 53 runs in the first T20I match in the bilateral series here on Wednesday.
Losing the toss, India came out to bat and both openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan ,went off to a brilliant start. India scored 202/3 in 20 overs.
The two openers have put up a partnership of 158 runs, which is the highest Indian opening stand in T20I.
Though Rohit and Dhawan lost their wickets in quick succession, skipper Virat Kohli played a brazing knock of unbeaten 26 from 11 balls towards the end which helped the men-in-blue to cross the 200 mark.
MS Dhoni remained not out at 7(2).
Ish Sodhi picked up two wickets for New Zealand conceding 25 runs in four overs.
Chasing a huge target of 203, New Zealand kept on losing wickets right from the beginning and could manage to score only 149/8 in 20 overs.
Wicket keeper batsman Tom Latham was the highest scorer for New Zealand with 39 from 36 balls.
Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel shared two wickets each for India.
Ashish Nehra, who played his last international match in Delhi, remained wicket-less.
The win in Delhi is the first ever T20I win by India against New Zealand.
India lead the three-match T20I series 1-0.
