Hima Das wins gold in Under-20 World Athletics, creates history
Tampere/Guwahati, July 13 (IBNS): Eighteen-year-old Hima Das, daughter of a farmer from Kandhulimari village near Dhing in central Assam’s Nagaon district, created history on Thursday as she clinched the gold medal in the 400m final at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships in Tampere, Finland.
Hima Das scripted history after she clocked 51.46 seconds to claim the top position, becoming the first Indian sprinter to do so in a global track event.
She had clocked 51.32 seconds to finish sixth position in the Commonwealth Games 400m final in Gold Coast.
Recently, Hima won gold medals in Women 200 m and 400 m race in the 58th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships held at the Sarusajai Sports complex in Guwahati.
The new Indian sensation sprinter completed the Women 200 m race by taking 23.10 seconds and Women 400 m race by taking 51.13 seconds.
People of Kandhulimari village and from the neighbourhood had assembled at her house to celebrate Hima’s victory.
Hima started off playing football with boys in her village, but a local coach advised her to take up athletics.
Hima was spotted by Nipon Das, an athletics coach with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare during the inter-district athletics meet, where she won gold in 100 m and 200 m event.
