Indian Tennis star Sania Mirza named UN Goodwill Ambassador

New Delhi, Nov 25 (IBNS) The UN Women has named Indian Tennis icon Sania Mirza as the United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the South Asian region.

Speaking on the issue, Mirza on Tuesday tweeted: "Honoured to be the UN good will ambassador for women empowerment and to fight for violence against women #movingforward."

She is the highest ranked female tennis player ever from India, with a career high ranking of 27 in singles and 7 in doubles.

Mirza recently won the 2014 US Open Mixed Doubles Event  and the WTA Finals.

She began playing tennis at the age of six and turned a professional player in 2003.
