Indian women put up a plucky fight before going down 0-2 to Germany
Tokyo/IBNS: Indian women put up a brave fight before going down 0-2 to favourite Germany in their second group league match in the Tokyo Olympic games Monday.
After being thrashed 1-5 by Netherlands in the earlier league match, Indian women who qualified for the Olympics for the first time in Tokyo displayed a plucky fight. Things could have been different for India if they were able to convert the penalty stroke and utilize other scoring opportunities they forced.
Germany, a strong contender for the title in this Olympics, forged ahead in the end of first quarter when they forced a penalty corner in the 12the minute. From the penalty corner Germany skipper Nike Lorenz flicked the ball past Indian keeper Savita to take the lead (1 – 0).
In spite of conceding a goal, India kept up the pressure and earned a penalty corner in the32nd minute.
As the shot from the penalty corner was entering German goal it hit and rival defender India was awarded the penalty stroke after a referral. But to the dismay of all Indians watching the television, the shot taken by Gurjit Singh was brilliantly saved by German keeper Sonntag.
Three minutes later, Germany buttressed their lead as their forward Ann Shroder found the target (2-0) in the 35th minute. Thereafter both the teams made quite a few goal bound moves without any further success.
