Its a great day: Saina after achieving world no.1 rank

New Delhi, Mar 28 (IBNS): Indian badminton icon Saina Nehwal on Saturday said it was a 'great day' for he as she climbed to the number one sport in the world rankings, creating a new history in the history of the game in India.

Saina, who cruised to the final of the India Open Super Series on the same day, became the first woman badminton player from India to reach the top spot.

An elated Saina tweeted: "World number 1 oh my god it's a great day and really happy to be playing finals tomorrow at india open in Delhi."

She said: "Keep supporting friends thank u all for the love."

Creating history and writing a new chapter in the history of Indian badminton, the iconic star reached the  world number one ranking following Spain's Carolina Marin's defeat in the India Open Super Series semifinal clash.

Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have joined the rest of the nation in congratulating the player after she scripted a new chapter in her glorious career where she has even bagged an Olympic medal.

On the official Twitter handle of the President of India, Mukherjee said: "Congrats Saina Nehwal on becoming World no 1 in Badminton; well deserved honour; best wishes for Indian Open Semi Final."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian badminton star and tweeted: "The phenomenal accomplishments of @NSaina make us very proud. I congratulate her on being the World Number 1."

Congress leader and former Sports Minister Ajay Maken also joined the rest of the nation in congratulating Nehwal as he posted on Twitter: "Saina scales World No.1 ranking - Congrats Saina! We are all proud of you and your achievements!"

Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu said: "Hearty Congratulations to @NSaina for becoming the first Indian woman shuttler to reach World No.1 ranking. Proud moment for India."

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis tweeted: "Congratulations @NSaina for creating history of being the World Number 1 and for being the first Indian woman shuttler to achieve this feat!"

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said: "Wonderful. Congratulations to @NSaina for becoming first Indian woman badminton player to be ranked World No. 1."

Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah posted: "Heartiest congratulations to @NSaina, a role model for today's youth to prove that hard work has no alternative & always pays off #WorldNo1."

India's iconic cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Sachin Tendulkar tweeted: "Congratulations to @NSaina on becoming the first Indian woman to be the World Number 1.Well done and keep smashing them on! A true role model for aspiring sports persons in the country."

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli said: "Congratulations @NSaina for becoming the first Indian woman shuttler to become World No.1! You have made us proud!"

Former Indian team skipper Anil Kumble tweeted: "Congratulations @NSaina on becoming #1. True Champion! Proud of you!"

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman said: "Congrats @NSaina on creating history by becoming the 1st Indian to be number one.U continue to make us proud.Keep it up and good luck:)"

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher posted: " CONGRATULATIONS @NSaina for making India & Indians proud all over the world. Thank You. You are the BESTEST.:)"

Actor Riteish Deshmukh said:"You made India proud - world No1 Badminton champion @NSaina - more power to you - Congratulations."
