Japan Open table tennis tournament canceled

| @indiablooms | Jul 08, 2020, at 03:52 pm

Tokyo/Xinhua: The Japan Open table tennis tournament has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport's world governing body ITTF announced.

The Japan Open, scheduled initially in Kitakyushu between 21-26 April 2020, was provisionally postponed after the coronavirus outbreak.

"The ITTF and Japan Table Tennis Association (JTTA) have been working together to find new suitable dates for the event towards the end of the year. However, the ongoing travel restrictions to Japan amidst the pandemic have made it impossible to reschedule the event in 2020," ITTF said in a
statement on Tuesday.

ITTF has canceled about 30 tournaments since February, and all events before August postponed.

The World Team Table Tennis Championships in Busan have been pushed back until the early months of 2021. New dates for the tournament are due to be set by the ITTF Executive Committee at its next remote meeting on July 10.

The ITTF is also monitoring the situation regarding men's and women's World Cups due to be held in October.
