Jason Holder suspended for St Lucia Test after second minor over-rate offence, Shane Warne calls decision as 'ridiculous'

Melbourne, Feb 4 (IBNS): Former Australian spinner Shane Warne on Monday called the International Cricket Council's decision to suspend Windies captain Jason Holder over slow overrate charges as 'ridiculous'.

"The test didn’t go 3 days - can you please appeal this @JaseHolder98 ! What a ridiculous decision - where’s the common sense here ? Ps Congrats on a wonderful series win too. International cricket needs a strong Windies team & hopefully this is just the start @BrianLara," Warne tweeted.

Windies were ruled to be two overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration during the Test against England in Antigua

Windies captain Jason Holder has been suspended for one Test and fined 40 per cent of his match fee, while his players have been fined 20 per cent of their match fees, for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second Test in Antigua that ended on Saturday.

Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the suspension on Holder after the Windies were ruled to be two overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.

As Holder had previously been found guilty of a minor over-rate offence during the Barbados Test against Sri Lanka last June, this offence constituted his second minor over-rate offence in a Test match within a 12-month period.

The suspension means Holder will miss the third Test against England in St Lucia, which starts on 9 February.

Holder pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charge was laid by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Rod Tucker, all from the Emirate Elite Panel of ICC Umpires, and fourth official Joel Wilson.
