Kolkata: K C Mahindra Invitation School Regatta begins at Lake Club

Kolkata, May 22 (IBNS). Forty-fourth K C Mahindra Invitation School Regatta got off to a colourful start with city-based Tirthapati Institution and Ashok Hall For girls winning their respective races on the inaugural day of the meet at Lake Club Course in Rabindra Sarovar here on Sunday.

Earlier the school meet , which is only of its kind in the country, was inaugurated by  former state  Urban Development Minister Firhad  Hakim in the presence of  Secretary of Bengal Olympic Association Chandan Roy Chowdhury, Lake Club president Dr. Shyamal Mukherjee, Joint Secretaries Subrata Guha and Debabrata Dutta , Convenor of the meet Kalyan Sarangi and Lake Club Captain of Boats Arup Chakrabarty.

Inaugurating the meet Hakim said  the passion for rowing is gaining popularity in the country which is evident from the fact that India is also competing in rowing event in forthcoming Rio Olympics.

He urged school rowers to take up rowing seriously so that they can also represent the country in the days to come.

Regatta convenor  Kalyan Sarangi informed that one major highlight of this year's school meet is that  a number of teams  from districts like both the Midnapores , 24 Parganas, Hooghly and Birbhum are competing in the meet.

"These school rowers were provided all necessary training and other facilities  by the club free of any charge," Sarangi said.

In the first race of the day, Tirthapati Boys  took the lead from the beginning and beat Hurtleys H S  easily.

The other race   saw experienced Ashok Hall proved far too superior against  National High School for Girls.

About fifty schools from Kolkkata and several other districts  are participating in this week-long meet.

The final will be held on  May 28 next.
