Legendary Bengali footballer Surajit Sengupta dies of COVID-19

Kolkata/IBNS: Legendary Bengali footballer Surajit Sengupta died of COVID-19 on Thursday.

He was 70.

Sengupta, a former East Bengal captain, was admitted to a city hospital on Jan 23.

Sengupta started his career as a Mohun Bagan player and later joined Mohammedan Sporting and East Bengal.

Mourning his demise, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted, "Lost veteran star footballer Surajit Sengupta today. Heartthrob of football fans and an outstanding national sportsman as well as a perfect gentleman, he will ever be in our hearts. Deepest condolences."
