Mbappé vs Paraguayan Senator: Ugly World Cup spat spirals into international controversy

Amarilla has issued a lengthy public statement demanding an apology from Mbappé after her remarks about the French captain triggered widespread outrage online.

Racist remarks spark controversy

The controversy began after France eliminated Paraguay from the World Cup.

Amarilla allegedly referred to Mbappé as a "colonised Cameroonian" who was "pretending hard to be French, resentful, newly rich, arrogant, and ugly."

She further claimed that France had "won by a fluke" and alleged that Mbappé, the team's talisman, was "nervous and scared to death the whole match, like his entire team."

Mbappé hits back

Mbappé responded with a strongly worded post on X, describing Amarilla as "a despicable woman" who was "unworthy" of holding public office.

Accusing the senator of racism, the France captain wrote that he would "never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world."

He also defended Paraguay's players while distancing them from Amarilla's comments.

"You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition."

"Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country."

Amarilla refuses to back down

Although Amarilla reportedly deleted her earlier post, she refused to retract her position.

In an open letter posted on X, she criticised Mbappé's conduct during France's World Cup clash with Paraguay, claiming his pre-match remark—"If we have to get our hands dirty, let's get dirty"—was a direct insult to Paraguay and its players.

She demanded that Mbappé withdraw his comments and apologise, arguing that his description of her as a "despicable woman" amounted to gender-based violence against her as an indigenous, mestiza female senator.

Amarilla also threatened legal action.

On-field tensions spilled over

The Round of 16 encounter between France national football team and Paraguay national football team was marred by repeated flashpoints as Paraguay employed an aggressive approach to contain Mbappé.

The French forward was on the receiving end of several heavy challenges, including late tackles and off-the-ball fouls, leading to heated exchanges between players throughout the match. The French camp was left frustrated by what it believed was lenient officiating.

Tempers flared again after the final whistle when Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill attempted to shake hands with Mbappé. After the French captain appeared to walk past him, Gill threw the match ball at Mbappé's back, sparking a brief confrontation involving players and staff before officials intervened to restore order.

Gill later admitted he had "lost his temper" after feeling snubbed, and the incident quickly went viral on social media.
