Punjab Kings has appointed senior Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan as its skipper for the next IPL season.

Introducing their new skipper, the iPL squad tweeted: "Gabbar will be at the 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗵𝗮𝗿 for Punjab Kings! #SherSquad, welcome your Skipper, Jatt ji!"

He will replace Mayank Agarwal as Punjab Kings captain.

Agarwal failed to take the squad to the IPL play-offs earlier this year.

Dhawan had earlier captained the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise.

He also captains the second string Indian ODI team in certain series where Rohit Sharma or his regular deputy is not available.

Dhawan has played only in the 50-over format of the Indian team in recent months.

Dhawan will also captain the Indian squad in the upcoming ODI series in New Zealand.
