Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David has been fined by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after making an “obscene, offensive or insulting” gesture during his team’s IPL clash against the Mumbai Indians.

The incident occurred during a high-pressure match in which the Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the Mumbai Indians in a last-ball thriller.

A gesture during dugout celebrations triggers action

According to the IPL disciplinary report, Tim David—who was dismissed for a golden duck—was seen making a middle-finger gesture while celebrating from the RCB dugout as his team edged past MI in a closely contested finish.

The gesture quickly went viral on social media and drew widespread criticism from fans.

BCCI imposes fine and demerit points

In an official statement, the BCCI confirmed that David had breached Article 2.6 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting.”

He has been fined 30% of his match fee and handed two demerit points. The board also noted that the player admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee.

Context of the match

The match itself saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru secure a narrow two-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in a tense final-over finish.

The win was significant for RCB, as it strengthened their position at the top of the points table while eliminating MI from playoff contention.

Player’s emotional reaction

Tim David, who previously played for Mumbai Indians, was part of the emotional backdrop of the contest, with the victory carrying added significance due to his former association with the franchise.

However, the celebratory gesture overshadowed the post-match reactions and led to disciplinary action from the league authorities.
