Bangalore, May 14 (IBNS): Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli (109) and AB de Villiers (129*) set up a record second wicket partnership of 229 runs which helped their Royal Challengers Bangalore thrash Gujarat Lions by a mammoth 144 runs in an IPL match here on Saturday.

Kohli and his South African teammate scripted a magical partnership which helped the side score 248 runs for the loss of three wickets and then it was RCB bowlers who bowled out Gujarat for 104 runs with eight balls to spare to win the match.

Chris Jordan picked up 4/11 in 3 overs and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal scalped 3/19 in 4 overs as RCB demolished the Gujarat side that kept losing wickets in regular intervals.

Australian Aaron Finch remained the top scorer for the side with his 37 runs.

Earlier, it was RCB batting that set the mercury go up at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium where Kohli and AB de Villiers probbaly displayed all the shots available in their arsenal.

They set up the partnership record in IPL history.

Kohli achieved a significant record as he became the first  batsman in IPL to score century against the  the same opponents in one edition of the league.

In his 55-ball 109, he hit five boundaries and eight sixes.

AB de Villiers entertained his fans by his unbeaten 52-ball 129 where he hit 12 sixes and 10 boundaries which completely destroyed the opponent bowling attack.

As he smashed the 43-ball century, AB became fifth fastest batsman in IPL to reach the three-figure mark.

RCB, however, made a poor start as they lost the wicket of Chris Gayle (6) in the fourth over of the match.

Praveen Kumar picked up two wickets for Gujarat.
