Rohit Sharma can open India's innings at home: Adam Gilchrist

Mumbai: As Rohit Sharma is set to open India's innings in the upcoming series against South Africa, former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist said the Mumbaikar can open his team's batting while playing in the home ground, media reports said.

Gilchrist, who shared dressing room with Rohit in the Indian Premier League (IPL), said it might be challenging for the Mumbai batsman to open the innings in Australia, England and South Africa.

The selectors picked the Indian team for the upcoming South Africa home series.

With KL Rahul being dropped from the Test team after his poor performance, Rohit is all set to open the Indian innings against South Africa.

Chief selector MSK Prasad said, "We want to give Rohit Sharma an opportunity to open the innings in Tests."

Rohit has been opening the innings for India in the limited overs cricket for several years now.

Young batsman Shubman Gill has also found a place in the team along with Mayank Agarwal.

The three Tests against South Africa will be played at Visakhapatnam, Pune and Ranchi. The competition will begin on October 2.
