New Delhi, Mar 28 (IBNS): Creating history and writing a new chapter in the history of Indian badminton, iconic star Saina Nehwal on Saturday reached the world number one ranking following Spain's Carolina Marin's defeat in the India Open Super Series semifinal clash.

Saina is the first Indian women player to reach the top position in the ranking list, ending the Chinese domination in the spot.

The official ranking will be released next week.

Marin was defeated by Thai Ratchanok Intanon 21-19 21-23 22-20 in her match.

Meanwhile, Nehwal defeated Japan's Yui Hashimoto 21-15, 21-11  to cruise to the final of the  India Open Super Series.

Olympic medalist Nehwal will replace China's Li Xuerui in the top position.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian badminton star and tweeted: "The phenomenal accomplishments of @NSaina make us very proud. I congratulate her on being the World Number 1."

Congress leader and former Sports Minister Ajay Maken also joined the rest of the nation in congratulating Nehwal as he posted on Twitter: "Saina scales World No.1 ranking - Congrats Saina! We are all proud of you and your achievements!"
