New Delhi/IBNS: Away from the badminton court, Indian star Saina Nehwal on Wednesday made her political debut by joining the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking at a press conference, Saina Nehwal said she is looking forward to contributing to the nation in her new avatar.

" Today, I am joining a party that performs well for the country," she said. "Modi sir has done so much for sports in India with initiatives like Khelo India. Looking forward to work hard for the country and the people," she said.

"I am thankful to BJP for the honour and I hope to do something good for the country," she said.

BJP's national general secretary Arun Singh inducted her to the party.

In her career, Saina has won more than 24 major international titles.

She won the Bronze medal in 2012 London Olympics.

She was the first Indian badminton player from India to win an Olympic medal.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist is gearing up for 2020 Olympics.

Saina joined the BJP ahead of the Delhi Assembly polls.

The election is set to be held on Feb 8.

Several Indian sports icons have joined the BJP in recent times.

Cricketer Gautam Gambhir and wrestlers Yogeshwar Dutt and Babita Phogat are some of the big names in the list.
