Sangakkara becomes fastest batsman to score 12,000 runs in Tests

Wellington, Jan 3 (IBNS): Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara on Saturday added a new record in his career as he become the fastest player to reach 12,000 runs in Tests.

He reached the runs  in his 224th Test innings.

With  Sangakkara scoring 33 unbeaten runs with his willow against New Zealand in their first innings, Sri Lanka ended the first day of the second Test against the hosts 78 for five.

New Zealand were bowled out for 221 runs in their first innings.

The hosts lead the series 1-0.
