Sania feels 'humbled' after touching number 1 spot

New Delhi, Apr 13 (IBNS) Indian Tennis icon Sania Mirza on Monday said she was feeling humbled after becoming the first woman from the nation to become number one doubles player in the world.

"Wow.. What a day it's been number 1 in the world.. It just sunk in. I hav so many people to thank but first and foremost I want to thank God I feel so so blessed," Mirza said in a tweet.

She said: "I wanna thank my family,my loved ones,friends,my coaches over then years,my partners and u guys who believed in me and supported me-All these years..this is a dream come true and I dedicate this back to u guys I also wanna thank the ppl who didn't believe in me-You just pushed me harder and made me more determined to fulfil my dreams."

She tweeted: "I am humbled to be the first woman who has achieved this and I strive to keep working hard for as long as I play.. A big hug to all of you."

She said: "One last thing I'd like to tell all the young girls-BELIEVE- believe in yourself so strongly that the world can't help but believe in u too."

Sania and her doubles partner Martina Hingis won the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, USA, thus clinching 14 matches in a row. The duo beat Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak in the final clash. This ensured Sania the top spot in the world of Tennis.

Meanwhile, both President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have appreciated and wished the Tennis star over her achievement.

Mukherjee tweeted: "Congrats Indian Team on winning bronze in Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament #PresidentMukherjee."

"An excellent accomplishment @MirzaSania! Congrats on being World Number 1 in doubles," Modi tweeted.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wished the player and tweeted:"First @NSaina in singles.Now @MirzaSania in doubles. Badminton and tennis World Number 1. Congratulations. You both make us proud."

The sporting world also congratulated the Tennis star.

India Tennis icon Leander Paes congratulated Sania and tweeted: "Congratulations @MirzaSania .. Welcome to the Number 1 club!! Proud of you..Great job."

Pakistani cricketer and Sania's husband Shoaib Malik tweeted: "Mrs. Malik just became the 1st Indian tennis player to be the World's # 1! Lots of love from all the Pakistani fans."
