Sharad Pawar likely to contest BCCI polls

New Delhi, Feb 2 (IBNS) Former Union Minister Sharad Pawar is likely to contest for the post of president in the Board of Control for Cricket in India elections, reports said on Monday.

Pawar, presently the president of Mumbai Cricket Association, was BCCI president from 2005 to 2008.  He had also been the president of International Cricket Council from 2010 to 2012.

The BCCI elections have been postponed twice following the Supreme Court hearing of the 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal.

On January 22, the apex court ordered that BCCI elections should be held within the next six weeks.

With N. Srinivasan being barred from owning a IPL franchise and contesting BCCI polls at the same time, Pawar's entry into the field is significant.

This is the East Zone's turn to nominate a president meaning Pawar needs to secure the votes of the majority of East Zone units of the BCCI.

Pawar had earlier declined to contest since Srinivasan had a good chance of securing  a second full term supported by East Zone members. But the court order seems to have changed the equations.

The BCCI may summon a working committee meeting on February 10 to formally give notice of the AGM, which must be held on or before March 5.
