Former Indian captain and superstar batsman Virat Kohli announced his retirement from T20 International after India beat the challenging South African squad by seven runs to lift the T20 World Cup on Saturday.

Kohli, who was struggling with his form in the T20 World Cup, smashed 76 runs in the final match and stabilised the innings after the Men in Blue lost three quick wickets.

Kohli, who was declared the Player of the Match, said during the post match event: " This was my last T20 World Cup, and this is what we wanted to achieve."

He said the final match against South Africa was also his last T20 match for the national team.

He said it was time for the next generation of T20 cricketers to take over from him.

The next T20 World Cup will be held in 2026.

"Some amazing players will take the team forward and keep the flag waving high," Kohli said.

Kohli was also part of the 2011 World Cup winning squad.

Rohit Sharma, under whose leadership India won the title, was part of MS Dhoni's 2007 T20 winning team.
