Vusimuzi Sibanda injured before India's tour to Zimbabwe

Harare, July 9 (IBNS) Zimbabwe batsman Vusimuzi Sibanda has sustained a right ankle injury, during national squad practice for the next month’s home series against India, officials said on Thursday.

"The injury occurred at Harare Sports Club during a warm-up session yesterday morning, when a back-pedalling Sibanda stepped on team analyst Stanley Chioza’s foot. He then rolled over his right ankle, resulting in the injury," the Zimbabwe Cricket said in a statement.

“I took Vusi for an x-ray, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging scans and the results are expected this afternoon,” said the team physiotherapist Anesu Mupotaringa, adding: “He is currently in pain and I have given him a crutch to avoid pressure on the ankle. I also gave him medication to help with the pain and swelling, and he will receive treatment twice daily to speed up recovery with the hope of him being fit for the India tour.”

Head coach Dave Whatmore is confident Sibanda will return to practice in quick time.

“It was just a minor accident that left Vusi with a sprained ankle. He should be okay after a week,” Whatmore said.

Preparations for the home series against India are ongoing, with the squad having training sessions daily at Harare Sports Club, which will host the three One-Day International and two Twenty20 International matches of the tour.
