World Cup victory: Sachin Tendulkar wins Laureus Sporting Moment award

Berlin/IBNS: Indian iconic batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who was part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team,  won the Laureus best sporting moment in the last 20 years title for the time when he was lifted on the shoulders of his teammates following the 50-over title victory in Mumbai.

"With the incredible backing of Indian cricket fans, who united in support of their hero, the Laureus Sporting Moment Award (2000-2020) public fan vote was won by Sachin Tendulkar. Voted for by sports fans around the world, the Award celebrated moments from the past two decades where sport has unified people in the most extraordinary way," the official website of the award said.

He became the first Indian to clinch the prestigious award.

On his sixth attempt, Tendulkar led India to victory at the 2011 ICC World Cup. 

This was India's first World Cup victory on home soil.

India had won the title in 1983 previously.

Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton and footballer Lionel Messi were declared joint winners of the prestigious Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award in front of a glittering international audience in Berlin.
