Lufthansa to induct 25 new aircraft in 2026, roll out onboard service upgrade

Berlin: German carrier Lufthansa will add 25 new aircraft to its fleet in 2026 as part of a broader push to improve punctuality and upgrade passenger services, the airline said on Tuesday.

Jens Ritter, chief executive of Lufthansa Airlines, said the inductions would support “extensive product improvements on board and on the ground”, with a particular focus on long-haul routes.

The airline plans to introduce a revamped service offering aimed at making long-distance travel more attractive across all cabin classes.

Ritter said recent operational performance had also improved following major delays in 2023 and 2024.

“We are as punctual as we were 10 years ago,” Ritter said, without providing specific data.

Lufthansa said the upgrades would extend beyond business and first-class cabins to economy passengers, who make up the majority of travellers.

Economy-class customers will be offered a choice of three hot meals instead of the industry standard two and will receive a small toiletries kit for the first time.

Ritter described 2026 as “a very special and decisive year” for the airline, which is marking its 100th anniversary.

To commemorate the milestone, six aircraft, including an Airbus A380 based in Munich, will operate with special centenary liveries.

The airline also plans to begin equipping aircraft with in-flight internet connectivity using Starlink, the satellite service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

The new aircraft consume less fuel and require less maintenance than older planes, supporting the airline’s broader cost-cutting efforts.
