52 Uzbeks killed in Kazakhstan bus inferno

In all 52 people were killed after a bus caught fire in north-western Kazakhstan on Thursday.

Horrific pictures and video show the inferno from which only five people escaped alive.

The accident happened at 10:30 local time on Thursday (04:30 GMT) in the Irgiz district of Aktobe region.

The bus is thought to have been carrying citizens of neighbouring Uzbekistan to or from Russia along the Samara-Shymkent route, said local media, the report said.

'According to preliminary information, there were 57 people - all Uzbek citizens - on the bus and of them 52 passengers have died, while five managed to get out on their own,' media reports quoted Aktilek Kenes, press secretary of the Aktobe regional emergency situations department, as saying.

It was unclear in which direction the bus had been travelling, but the route is widely used to transport Uzbek migrant workers to and from Russia where they often work on building sites.
