Austin: At least eight people died after the crowd surged forward as rapper Travis Scott was on stage at the Astroworld Festival in US city of Houston on Friday, media reports said.

The mishap left several people injured.

"We had scores of individuals that were injured," Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña was quoted as saying by CNN  during a news conference early Saturday morning.

With about 50,000 people attending the sold-out event, Peña described what unfolded as a "mass casualty" incident -- noting it was triggered when the crowd began "to compress toward the front of the stage" just after 9 p.m. local time.

"People began to fall out, become unconscious and it created additional panic," Peña was quoted as saying by the American news channel.
