Kabul: Family members of a university lecturer and political commentator from Afghanistan have confirmed he has been arrested and taken to an unknown location, media reports said on Sunday.

Faizullah Jalal's children have asked people to help release their father.

A post from the official Twitter account of his child Sabrina Jalal read: "It has been eight hours since the arrest of my father, Professor Jalal, and ever since, we have not been able to contact him. I call on the Taliban to immediately release my father. Please join my call."

Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (Taliban government of Afghanistan) though has not confirmed the arrest, sources on the condition of anonymity have told Shamshad TV- an Afghan TV channel- that Faizullah Jalal has been arrested by IEA, reports Khaama Press.

Faizullah Jalal was not only an outspoken critic of the previous government but also of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan who would participate in TV talks shows and round tables, the news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International condemned the arrest and tweeted: "Amnesty International condemns the arrest of Professor Faizullah Jalal, Kabul university lecturer for exercising his freedom of expression and criticizing the Taliban on a TV show. We call on the Taliban authorities to immediately and unconditionally release him. #FreeJalal."
