Afghanistan: Taliban releases manager of a local media outlet
Kabul: Afghanistan Journalists Center (AFJC) has said The Taliban Directorate of Intelligence prison released the former owner and editor of local station Radio Aftab after he was kept in four months of detention in Afghanistan.
After the Taliban forces discovered journalistic posts on his social media accounts, Mirza Hasani, the former editor and owner of Radio Aftab, was arrested in Herat province in north-eastern Afghanistan, reports Khaama Press.
Hasani was detained on suspicion of working as a reporter for the National Resistance Front (NRF), an anti-Taliban militant group, and was subsequently transferred to the Taliban’s intelligence agency’s prison in Kabul.
The AFJC welcomed Hasani’s release but urged the Taliban to also release Khalid Qadiri, who is also detained by the Taliban and given a one-year prison term.
“We (AFJC) also call on authorities to release Journalist Khalid Qadiri who was sentenced to one year in prison in May for allegedly spreading anti-Islamic Emirate propaganda and committing espionage for foreign media outlets, and urge them to ensure journalists can do their work without interference, fear, or reprisal,” AFJC said.
