Afghanistan: US airstrikes on Tirinkot checkpoint kills 8 cops

Kabul, Sept 19 (IBNS): In airstrikes conducted by the US, at least eight Afghan National Police (ANP) personnel were killed Afghanistan's central Uruzgan province, media reports said on Monday.

The checkpoint in the Saki area of Tirinkot, the provincial capital on the Uruzgan-Kandahar road was bombed last evening, Highway Commander Haji Rahimullah told Afghanistan's Pajhwok Afghan News.

One policeman was killed in the first raid on the checkpoint and seven others were martyred in a second airstrike,” he was quoted as saying by the news agency.

US military spokesman Gen. Charles Cleveland  claimed that the raid was conducted after Afghanistan's security personnel were attacked by militants in Tirinkot.

“We don’t know who the gunmen firing at Afghan forces were. But Afghan and US forces reserve the right to retaliate in self-defence,” Gen. Cleveland was quoted as saying by Afghan news agency.
