Bangladesh: Hindu lawyer Chinmoy Krishna Das gets bail, still remains in custody in murder case

Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das was granted bail in one case on Thursday, but he remains in custody as multiple other cases against him are still pending in Bangladesh, according to media reports.

The bail order was issued by Chittagong Judicial Magistrate Shakhawat Hossain following a hearing, court officials told the Dhaka Tribune.

Case filed in 2023

According to court sources, the case was filed in 2023 by BNP leader and former minister Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin.

The complaint accuses Das and five others of land grabbing, intimidation, and assault in the Mekhla area of Hathazari upazila.

Das is currently facing multiple charges, including his alleged involvement in the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif.

The incident occurred on November 26, 2024, during clashes surrounding Das’s bail hearing in a sedition case reportedly linked to the alleged desecration of the national flag.

Lawyer hacked to death

During the violence, the lawyer was beaten and hacked to death.

The victim’s father, Jamal Uddin, subsequently filed a murder case naming 31 accused.

The trial in that case is currently underway.

On August 25, the court accepted the chargesheet against 39 accused, including Chinmoy Krishna Das.
