Brazil's top electoral court bars ex-President Lula from running as a presidential candidate

Brasilia, Sept 1 (IBNS): A top electoral court in Brazil has disallowed tainted former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from contesting in the upcoming election.

In an overwhelming majority, the seven-member court voted six-one in favour of barring the convicted former President from taking part in October's vote.

Despite his conviction, exit poll results projected him as the strongest contestant.

His legal team is expected to challenge the verdict.

The Worker's Party (PT) said it would defend its leader.

"We will present all appeals before the courts for the recognition of the rights of Lula provided by law and international treaties ratified by Brazil," the statement released by the party said.

"We will defend Lula in the streets, with the people," it added.
