Brooklyn: Two cops shot dead

New York, Dec 21 (IBNS) Two New York police officers were shot dead at point-blank range by a man in the US Brooklyn area on Saturday, officials said on Sunday.

The attacker then committed suicide with the same game.

The deceased were identified as Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos.

The gunman named as Ismaaiyl Brinsley attacked the officers when they sitting in their patrol car.

"While sitting in a marked NYPD police car, in full uniform, both were ambushed and murdered in front of 98 Tompkins Avenue in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, New York City," Police Commissioner William J. Bratto said in a statement.

"According to witness statements, the suspect, who has been identified as 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, walked up to the police car. He took a shooting stance on the passenger side and fired his weapon several times through the front passenger window striking both officers in the head," he said.

US President Barack Obama has 'unconditionally'  condemned the attack .

"I unconditionally condemn today's murder of two police officers in New York City," The White House tweeted quoting Obama.
