Ottawa, Apr 10 (IBNS): Nick Shumlanski, who survived the Humboldt Broncos bus crash with a truck, has described his experience and the aftermath of the incident, media report said.

Shumlanski is one of those few people who escaped death in the bus crash, which claimed 15 lives.

Shunlanski- a member of the hockey team Humboldt Broncos- had spotted his home as the bus was heading north on Saskatchewan's highway 35.

Describing his experience, Shunlanski told CTV News Monday, "All of a sudden we just slammed on the brakes and that's pretty much the last thing I remember is just seeing a couple of guys stand up to see what was going on. And then I'm not sure what happened after that."

"Somebody woke me up, I think....And then I just managed to grab a phone from somebody, just called home to let them know that (they) needed to get there as soon as possible" he added.

The victims include players Adam Herold, Connor Lukan, Evan Thomas, Jacob Leicht, Jaxon Joseph, Logan Boulet, Logan Hunter, Logan Schatz, Stephen Wack, Xavier Labelle, team personnel Brody Hinz, Darcy Haugan, Glen Doerksen, Mark Cross and Tyler Beiber.

The team was on its way to Game 5 of a semi-final against the Nipawin Hawks, also in Saskatchewan, when the crash occurred around 5 pm Friday.

In a statement, the RCMP said, “The Coroner’s Office and the RCMP want to extend their deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives as well as those who were in the collision.”

Condolences poured in from every part of the country.

A visibly distraught president of Humboldt Broncos, Kevin Gringer, said that “it would be hard to process everything that has taken place over these last few days.”

He thanked the first responders and the medical personnel who stood by the injured at their hour of need.
