Canada: Toronto observes ‘Giving Tuesday’, encourages residents for donations to charitable organizations
Toronto/IBNS: The City of Toronto observed Nov 28 as ‘Giving Tuesday’ by highlighting the impact of local giving and connecting residents with opportunities to give back.
Occurring annually, and recognized globally, Giving Tuesday is a day to emphasize the spirit of giving and inspire support for charitable causes.
Toronto received more than 7,500 donations from individuals and organizations in the fiscal year of 2022 with a total value of $1.15 million support for various city priorities such as senior care, animal services and park care.
Residents looking to give back donations of funds, goods and services to the city and community partner programs this holiday season can make through the City’s official giving hub on the DonateTO web page.
“This Giving Tuesday, I would like to thank all the Torontonians …their support…DonateTO highlights the different ways our community can give back to those in need. If you…are able, I encourage you to do so,” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has said in a news release.
Extending its thanks to all the residents and businesses who have donated gifts, goods and services to make a difference in their communities, the city of Toronto shared some of the ways Toronto residents can give back this year:
Holiday Wish List for homelessness-focused agencies
Featuring City-funded community agencies, the annual Holiday Wish List supports individuals and families experiencing homelessness, with each agency having provided a list of needed items, including donations of warm clothes, personal hygiene products and gift cards as well as calls for volunteer support.
The City’s Holiday Wish List web page features a map to help Toronto residents connect with agencies in their own neighbourhoods.
FireFighters Toy Drive
Toronto Fire Station for the annual toy drive accepts new, unwrapped toys and gift cards drop off at any of Toronto’s 84 fire stations. These also accept non-perishable food donations for the Daily Bread Food Bank year-round. A map of Fire Station locations is on the City’s Emergency Services website.
Organizations supporting refugee claimants
Community agencies, including Black-led organizations, that are serving refugee claimants accept donations directly. A map of organizations and their needs can be found on the City’s website.
Specialized care and support for pets
Toronto Animals Services (TAS) are helped by donations to provide urgent medical care, support for individuals needing assistance with spay/neuter services or wellness care for their pets and specialized behavioural training for shelter dogs looking for their second chance.
TAS also has a wish list of items that can be dropped off at any of its three animal shelters. More information is available on the City’s Donate to Animal Services webpage.
Tech for Seniors
The City’s Long-Term Care homes welcome donations to purchase tablets for residents. Many residents enjoy connecting with loved ones, using interactive apps and games, watching videos and listening to music, and they need more devices to support the demand.
