Chaos at community event in US: 12 shot as gunfire erupts in Ohio, manhunt ongoing

At least 12 people were shot during a community event in the U.S. state of Ohio on Saturday, in what police say appears to be a chaotic exchange of gunfire near a popular festival area.

According to the Toledo Police Department, 10 victims are in stable condition while two remain in critical condition. Officers responded at around 5:37 p.m. to reports of a shooting near Delaware Avenue and Glenwood Avenue, close to the Old West End Festival.

When police arrived at the scene, they found multiple victims with gunshot injuries. Several were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while authorities expanded the search for the suspect or suspects across multiple locations, including areas around Delaware Avenue and Robinwood Avenue.

Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joe Heffernan told CBS News that early indications suggest more than one shooter may have been involved. “It appears as though there were at least two shooters… I think they were probably shooting at each other,” he said.

Victims are reported to be between the ages of 14 and 61.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed concern over the incident in a post on X, calling it deeply troubling and emphasizing that summer festivals should be safe spaces for families. He said he and his wife are praying for those affected and expressed confidence that law enforcement will apprehend those responsible.

Videos circulating on social media show panic as attendees fled the scene amid the sound of gunfire.

Eyewitness account

Tito Aguilar, who spoke to CBS News, said he was ordering food when he saw a group of juveniles attacking another young person.

Aguilar began recording on his phone moments before hearing gunshots.

Aguilar said he fled the area but later returned to look for friends, where he saw several injured people at the scene.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
