China: Citizen journalist Zhang Zhan jailed over Wuhan reporting

Beijing: China has jailed a citizen journalist for reporting on the Wuhan COVID-19 outbreak, media reports said.

Zhang Zhan was found guilty of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble", a frequent charge against activists, reports BBC.

The 37-year-old former lawyer was detained in May, and has been on hunger strike for several months, reported the British news channel.

Her lawyer reportedly said her health is in poor condition.

She is one of the citizen journalists of China who landed in trouble due to reporting on Wuhan.

There is no free media in China and authorities are known for clamping down on activists or whistleblowers seen as undermining the government's response to the outbreak, reports BBC.
