China: Elderly woman throws coin into jet engine, delays flight

Beijing, Jun 28 (IBNS): Travellers were left fuming in Shanghai airport after a China Southern Airlines flight got delayed by over five hours due to a bizarre incident, reports said.

As it unfolded, an elderly lady, identified as Qiu, threw some coins into one of the flight's engine, as sign of good luck.

The passenger who witnessed the act alerted the staff and the local police was informed.

On being asked, the lady confessed to throwing the coins but said it was intended for 'good luck'.

She threw a total of nine coins, but only one made it to the intended target, which was enough to force the evacuation of 150 passengers.

The police however said that no charges will be pressed against her.

"In order to make sure the flight is safe, China Southern maintenance has conducted a full examination of the plane's engine,' the airlines said in a statement.

The flight, scheduled for Guangzhou, departed more than five hours later after getting full clearance.
