Havana: The death toll due to an explosion at a luxurious hotel in Cuban capital Havana has touched 22, media reports said on Saturday.

The explosion left 60 others injured. They were all admitted to hospital for treatment.

It is believed a gas tanker which was parked outside the Saratoga Hotel in Old Havana ignited, causing an explosion which destroyed several floors of the building, reports BBC.

The hotel was gearing up for an opening post pandemic.

Search and rescue operation is still on.

The Cuban presidency said the dead included a pregnant woman and a child, reports BBC.

After the explosion, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel went to the scene of the incident and to a local hospital in Havana, where several of the injured were being cared for, according to images published by the Cuban Presidential Office on its Twitter account.
