Donald Trump hints at upcoming phases of sanctions on India over Russian oil purchase

Washington DC/IBNS: US President Donald Trump has hinted at further sanctions on India over the purchase of Russian oil amid the ongoing tariff war between the two countries, media reports said.

Trump hinted at phase two and three sanctions during a press conference at the Oval Office with Poland's President Karol Nawrocki.

When a Polish reporter asked the US President about no action against Russia, he shot back, "How do you know there's no action? Would you say that putting secondary sanctions on India, the largest purchaser outside of China, they're almost equal, would you say there was no action?

"That cost hundreds of billions of dollars to Russia. You call that no action? And I haven't done phase two yet or phase three. But when you say there's no action, I think you ought to get yourself a new job."

US-India tariff war

The Trump administration, which was earlier viewed as India-friendly, has slapped a 25 percent tariff on the South Asian country for its high tariffs on American exports and another 25 percent for purchasing oil from Russia which is fighting a war against Ukraine.

The White House, which has singled out India over Russian oil purchase, said the second 25 percent tariff will be effective from August 27, 2025.

Since the conflict in Ukraine began in early 2022, India significantly increased its imports of discounted Russian crude oil—now comprising over 30 percent of its total crude imports.

Indian refineries then export refined petroleum products globally which critics, especially in the U.S., argue that indirectly supports Russia’s war effort by funneling money into its economy.

In response, the US proposed tariffs and trade measures targeting India’s exports to discourage this behavior.

India said that, like any major economy, it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unequivocally said India won't compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen and livestock rearers.
