Donald Trump says US control of Greenland is ‘vital’ for Golden Dome missile shield

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said American control of Greenland was “vital” for national security, linking the Arctic island directly to his proposed Golden Dome air and missile defence system.

“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security. It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building,” Trump wrote on social media, reiterating his long-standing claim that Washington should take control of the Danish territory.

Trump argued that NATO would become “far more formidable and effective” if Greenland were under US control, warning that any alternative was “unacceptable”.

He also said NATO should take the lead in building the multi-layered missile defence system, adding that if the alliance failed to act, “Russia or China will”.

The remarks came just hours before senior Danish and Greenlandic officials were due to hold talks at the White House with Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss Greenland’s security and strategic importance.

Ahead of the meeting, Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen sought to defuse tensions, saying Denmark was increasing its military presence in Greenland and was in discussions with allies on boosting NATO’s footprint in the Arctic.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to seize the vast, sparsely populated island, which he sees as critical to US defence interests in the Arctic.

His comments signal renewed pressure on Denmark and NATO allies amid rising geopolitical competition in the region.
