At least 500 people were injured after a massive explosion occurred at a port in Iran's Bandar Abbas city on Saturday.

As per local media reports, the explosion occurred at 12.30 pm in the country's Shahid Rajaee Port.

The location of the port is strategic since it is located around 15 kilometers southwest of the port of Bandar Abbas.

The injured people were rushed to Hormozgan hospitals for treatment.

Four rapid response teams were dispatched to the scene after the explosion, the head of the Hormozgan Red Crescent Society, Mokhtar Salahshour, told Tehran Times.

The director general of Hormozgan’s crisis management department, Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, told the newspaper that the explosion was extremely strong, but the cause has not yet been determined.

According to reports, some people are feared to be trapped under the debris of some buildings that collapsed following the explosion.

A major fire is also raging at the site of the explosion.

Initial reports suggest that the blast originated from an administrative building located in the port complex.

All port operations were suspended following the explosion.

Emergency teams are currently working to bring the flames under control.
