Five Chinese military planes breaches Taiwan’s airspace, 24th intrusion in month

Taipei, Taiwan: Five Chinese military planes entered Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Monday, media reports said.

This was the 24th intrusion in February by Chinese military planes.

Three People’s Liberation Army Air Force Shenyang J-16 fighter jets, one Shenyang J-16D electronic warfare plane, and one Shaanxi KJ-500 early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft flew into the southwest corner of the ADIZ, according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND).

In response, Taiwan sent aircraft, issued radio warnings, and deployed air defense assets to monitor the planes, reports Taiwan News.

One of the Chinese aircraft was also tracked crossing the Taiwan Strait median line for the first time this year, the newspaper reported.

China has stepped up its military pressure on Taiwan in recent times.

Taiwan has been governed independently from mainland China since 1949.

Beijing views the island as its province, while Taiwan — a territory with its own democratically elected government — maintains that it is an autonomous country and has political and economic relations with several other nations that recognize its sovereignty.
