‘Images have power’: Sam Altman recounts Molotov attack, shares family photo

San Francisco/IBNS: Sam Altman has spoken about a frightening incident after his house in San Francisco was attacked, allegedly amid rising tensions around artificial intelligence.

What happened?

According to reports, a 20-year-old suspect threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s residence in the early hours of the morning and fled the scene.

The device reportedly struck the house but did not cause major damage.

Altman and his family were unharmed in the incident.

The suspect, identified as Alejandro Daniel Moreno-Gama, was later apprehended after police responded to a separate call at OpenAI headquarters, where a man had allegedly threatened to set the building on fire.

Authorities confirmed he was the same individual linked to the attack on Altman’s home.

Altman’s response

In a post on X and his personal blog, Altman reflected on the incident, revealing that the attack took place around 3:45 a.m.

“Images have power… I am sharing a photo in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house,” he wrote, adding that the object “bounced off the house and no one got hurt.”

Altman suggested the attack may be connected to his role in the AI industry and the growing anxiety surrounding technological advancements.

He also pointed to a recent “incendiary” article about him, saying he may have underestimated how narratives and public discourse can influence real-world actions.
