New Delhi: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Sunday conveyed to her Chinese counterpart Li Qiang that Italy is planning to leave China’s inter-continental Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Bloomberg reported.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Saturday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in New Delhi.

During the meeting Meloni openly expressed that the Italian government does not wish to be a part of BRI, asserting that Beijing’s famed multibillion-dollar infrastructure initiative has not brought any benefits for Rome, stated the report.

Italy officially signed up for the pact in 2019.

China has announced plans to hold a third conference of the BRI in Beijing next month.

What is BRI?

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) by China is a global infrastructure development strategy adopted by the Chinese government in 2013 to invest in more than 150 countries and international organizations.

It is considered a centerpiece of the Chinese leader Xi Jinping's foreign policy.
