Libyan plane hijakced, lands in Malta

Valletta, Dec 23 (IBNS): A Libyan plane, carrying 118 people on board, was hijacked and then forced to land in Malta, media reports said.

The flight belongs to Afriqiyah Airways.

The flight was reportedly flying inside Libya when it was diverted to Malta.

Maltese PM Joseph Muscat confirmed the matter and tweeted: "The #Afriqiyah flight from #Sabha to #Tripoli has been diverted and has landed in #Malta. Security services coordinating operations."

He said: "It has been established that #Afriqiyah flight has 111 passengers on board. 82 males, 28 females, 1 infant."

Malta International Airport  also confirmed the matter.

It tweeted: "MIA confirms there is an unlawful interference at the airport.Emergency teams dispatched.Visit http://www.maltairport.com  for flight info."

"Safety & security of passengers is our top priority. Some flights have been delayed or diverted, but airport operations were resumed. 1/2," the airport said.

The hijackers are reportedly armed with hand grenades.

Their demands are not yet known.
